Earlier this week, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and former military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida made it official to the Nigerian electorate that they will run for the Presidency in 2011. President Jonathan announced his plan to run for a 2nd term through a rather unconventional way using Facebook. Jonathan made this announcement on Monday morning to his over 210,000 followers on the social networking website. Meanwhile, alongside his children and former Senate President Ken Nnamani as well as current Speaker of the House Umar Ghali Na’Abba, IBB made the announcement for his plan to run as the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party. Nigerians turned out in droves in what was described as a festive and electric atmosphere to hear the General’s announcement. Many Nigerians are very excited and passionate for General Babangida because of the little that President Goodluck has been able to accomplish during his time in office. The oft criticized Goodluck told his Facebook followers that he knows they are tired of hearing about “empty promises” and promised, “to promise less and deliver more if he is elected”. At General Babangida’s public announcement he told the citizens that it was time for a rotation of power in the executive branch. He also stated that he has the experience necessary to move the country in the right direction. Babangida also added that the country can longer afford to experiment with the “future and destiny” of Nigeria. According to reports, President Goodluck plans to hold a formal announcement on Saturday from the capital.
