a. Agents of political socialization- These are the ways in which the people formulate and develop their political ideas. The most notable agents of political socialization would include family, school, and the media. In Nigeria, like most nations, family is the largest most influential agent of political socialization. Family is the most influential agent because of the many different ethnic groups in Nigeria. The ethnicity of the family plays a large role in developing the political ideologies of the young and thus is the agent of most influence in regards to political socialization.
b. Legitimacy- This is a government that has the moral authority to govern but also credibility and experience. This moral authority is usually found in the lawful transfer of power or from tradition. In Nigeria, the nation gets its legitimacy from its elections of government officials.
c. Parochial- A parochial is a person who does not participate in the political process and is hardly aware that a government even exists. In Nigeria, the level of parochials is considerably high partially due to the fact that Nigeria is an impoverished and underdeveloped country.
d. Participants- Participants are those who are involved as actual or potential part participants in the political process. Nigeria has a low number of participants.
e. Subject- Subjects are those who obey the government and the law but do not vote or actively involve themselves in the political process. Subjects make up the largest percent of the population in Nigeria.
f. Political Culture- is the traditional orientation of the citizens of a nation toward politics, which affects their perceptions of political legitimacy. As noted above, the vast majority are indifferent when in terms of politics and do not have a strong attitude toward their government.
j. Political Socialization- The teaching and learning of political knowledge, beliefs, and values. The political socialization of people in Nigeria is done mostly through family.
k. Political subculture- Political subcultures are the different groups of people in a nation and are separated by race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, language, geography, economic status. In Nigeria there are many political subcultures due to the fact that there are many different languages spoken in the country. Also, religious beliefs make up political subcultures in Nigeria with Islam and Christianity being the two most popular religions in the country.
