As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria boasts many kinds of subcultures. Nigeria has just over 250 ethnic groups. The largest of these are the Yoruba, Igbo, and Fulani. These three ethnic groups account for more than two-thirds the population. Six other ethnic groups make up another 27% of the population and about 240 smaller groups make up the rest of the populace. There are also over 500 different languages spoken in Nigeria. These different linguist groups also account for some of the significant subcultures in Nigeria. Although English is the official language only the urban elite use it. Niger-Congo is the most widely spoken language in Nigeria and Kanuri is another popular language but is primarily spoken in the Northeast. Overall, these different ethnic and linguist groups account for many of the significant subcultures in Nigeria.
d. What is the basis of government legitimacy in Nigeria?
The legitimacy of the Nigerian government is found in its elections. For decades Nigeria has had many problems with political stability. For years various military groups would take over the government and run a corrupt regime. Currently, Nigeria is experiencing its longest stretch of civilian rule since it became an independent nation. Politically stability in Nigeria in recent years has been much better than in years past because it is legitimate. The government is legitimate because all of its officials have been chosen through fair elections. However, in recent months questions about Nigeria’s political stability have begun to surface. With a presidential election set to occur in the approaching months the legitimacy of Nigerian government will be put to the test. If the next leaders of Nigeria are elected through fair and honest elections than the government will be legitimate. If not than the government will not be legitimate.
